The Story of PEACES and Threads!

Greetings, I’m Iqrama Muhammad, owner of PEACES and Threads boutique and founder of The PEACES Collective.  During my volunteer time at a thrift store, inspiration struck me after witnessing the sheer volume of clothing destined for landfills due to minor imperfections.  I envisioned a way to rescue these fabrics and transform them into beautiful and useful accessories and décor. A spark was ignited, and PEACES & Threads was born, an example of handmade, sustainable style.

After 35 years in the corporate world, I decided to revive a skill taught to me by my grandmother and traded in conference rooms and business trips for sewing rooms and craft markets. PEACES and Threads is a local handcraft business with a passion for repurposing fabrics and a commitment to the environment and community.

At PEACES and Threads, each piece tells a unique story. Through a blend of machine and hand-sewing, quilting and embroidery, each piece weaves a tale of beauty and purpose, while championing the practice of recycling and reuse. I believe everything has value that is united for a peaceful purpose.  Our motto is “Live your purpose…with style!”

I also serve as a teaching artist at local community centers and after school programs.  I enjoy working with people to teach them new skills and uniting with other local handcraft artists to ensure that the legacy of these arts continues for generations.

Throughout my career and over a number of diverse projects, I have harnessed the power of community through textile-based initiatives. As the founder and executive director of The PEACES Collective, a non-profit organization, our mission is to embrace and promote our heritage as Makers, develop leadership and build thriving communities through cooperative economics and education. A portion of the proceeds from PEACES and Threads is donated to The PEACES Collective, whose motto is “Happiness is Handmade!” Those proceeds are used to help build programs that serve the community.

For me, PEACES and Threads is more than a business.  It is an example of the transformative power of creativity and conscientiousness to build thriving communities. We hope you enjoy our products and that they bring you a bit of PEACE!
